Farm + Market: Healdsburg has arrived!
Farm + Market: Healdsburg Celebrates the Farms, Chefs, and Community Behind Sonoma County’s Culinary Identity
HEALDSBURG, CA - A major new culinary and cultural book project is bringing the story of Healdsburg’s food community to life through recipes, photography, oral histories, and the people who have shaped one of California’s most celebrated agricultural regions.
Farm + Market: Healdsburg, created in partnership with the Healdsburg Certified Farmers’ Market and the Friends of the Healdsburg Farmers’ Market, officially launches this spring. The 324-page hardcover book is authored and photographed by Liza Gershman, a Sonoma County native and longtime Healdsburg resident known for her award-winning culinary and documentary photography books.
The book features recipes and stories from more than 40 James Beard and Michelin-recognized chefs, restaurants, farmers, artisans, and community members, including contributors from SingleThread, Barndiva, Dry Creek Kitchen, and many others. A foreword by chef Melissa Yanc of Quail & Condor and an afterword by chef Duskie Estes help frame the project’s deeper exploration of food, place, and community.
More than a cookbook, Farm + Market: Healdsburg documents the interconnected ecosystem of farmers, chefs, ranchers, home cooks, gardeners, and local organizations that have helped define Healdsburg’s nationally recognized food culture.
“The farmers are the foundation of everything,” said Gershman. “This project became about preserving relationships, stories, and a way of living that is increasingly rare. Food is the medium, but the book is really about community.”
The book pairs documentary-style photography with essays and recipes that reflect Healdsburg’s deep agricultural roots and evolving culinary landscape. The first section traces the region’s history through farming traditions, local markets, immigrant communities, and the people behind the food movement that helped shape modern Healdsburg.
Proceeds from the book support the Healdsburg Certified Farmers’ Market, which has served as a cornerstone of the community since 1978, supporting local agriculture, sustainable farming, and direct relationships between growers and residents.
“This book is both a celebration and an archive,” said organizers from the Friends of the Healdsburg Farmers’ Market. “It honors the people whose work often happens quietly behind the scenes — the farmers, market volunteers, cooks, and families who sustain our local food culture every day.”
The project was funded through community support and collaboration, with contributions from local businesses, wineries, nonprofits, farmers, chefs, and residents throughout Sonoma County.
